Dealing with the effects of a disaster can take a huge toll on your physical and mental health and wellbeing. There might be a lot of unknowns and challenges that you will need to overcome – more so if you’ve been directly affected. It’s natural to experience a range of responses and emotions, including stress, fear, and anxiety. We know that communities impacted by floods and bushfires in recent months and years are still recovering.


Flood disasters can have a significant impact on the mental health and wellbeing of affected communities and individuals. While the initial focus is on keeping safe and protecting homes and families, it is also important to support our own mental wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us.


If you are feeling overwhelmed, it is important that you talk to someone you trust and find support. This could include talking with friends, family and community members as well as services in your local area, your GP, or a national support service about how you are feeling.
 

Get the latest information and support

The Services Australia website has important support information and regular updates for people impacted by the recent floods, including information about financial support available. Visit the Natural disaster events page to learn more.

 

You can also find flood and storm information and support on the Department of Health and Aged Care’s website, including information about medical treatment, prescription medicine and residential aged care support in flood affected areas.

Other government help to recover

Australian Government and state-based agencies provide relief and recovery services and support. Find out more through the online tool Recovery Connect.


The Disaster Assist website can help you find information on declared natural disasters. If you’re in an area affected by a disaster, you can search to find out what help is available for your Local Government Area.


The Moneysmart website has information about recovering financially after a natural disaster.


Talk to your bank about your mortgage repayments and fees. They might be able to help if you’ve experienced a natural disaster.
